The story writes itself.
I know a number of people are asking themselves why Georges St-Pierre is facing BJ Penn for the welterweight title when there are so many challenges in their respective weight classes. If you break things down from an objective stand point and follow the storyline the fighters create from the outcome of their matches, you will see that the UFC has a ton of options for the future. The UFC has apparently promised Kenny Florian a title shot after his fight with Roger Huerta and now they are at it again, as they are offering him another shot against champion BJ Penn sometime after the New Year. Well this is nothing new, they have done this in the past and an example is when they stated Fabricio Werdum would get a title shot after beating Gonzaga, well, we saw how that worked out.
The UFC feels the need to jump the gun and announce these supposed match ups that for some particular reason never come to fruition. With that being said, take a look at the Penn/GSP match up. Kenny Florian is supposed to square off against "The Prodigy" sometime after the St-Pierre fight, why? Yes, Florian has been on a tear in his last number of UFC bouts, but his last loss came from Sean Sherk. This is a man who has only lost to GSP, Hughes and Penn and has looked impressive in his last number of outings (minus the BJ bout). Why not have Florian face Sherk in a rematch on the same card as BJ and GSP. The story is there and it would only add to the build, so why not play off of it? Furthermore if BJ manages to beat Georges, I think the rubber match would be an absolute, right?
The welterweight division is in the same boat, Thiago Alves is waiting in the wings for a title shot that my or may not come. The problem with matching Alves up with GSP is that according to several rankings prior to October, Jon Fitch had been ranked #2 (look at the links and see). If that is the case, why did Fitch drop from number two to number three when he holds a victory over Alves and lost a decision to the best fighter in the division. Alves on the other hand, was ranked number three in the division, and beat Koscheck who was ranked forth or lower on most pundits lists.
Again the story lines are already created, match Fitch against Alves in a rematch and if Alves wins, then put him up against Georges. Conversely if Fitch wins, you sign Jake Shields and have them go at it (Yeah! I know, its wishful thinking).
It is also time for the UFC to build the existing talent they already have by smart match making. Guys like Cain Velasquez, Chris Wilson, Thiago Silva, Demian and Shane Carwin need to be nurtured and given the proper direction. I agree that the UFC's last show was very entertaining, but like Jon Fitch told The Fight Network, casual fans don't understand good MMA and the UFC dupes it's audience by putting sub par fighters on their cards as they try to pass them off as the world's elite. You can gift wrap shit all you want, but in the end you are still left with SHIT!

There is a reason Sherk doesn't fight Florian again. If Sherk wins, does he automatically get a rematch at BJ? And how would everyone else in the division look if the guy who beat them- Florian- loses? What about future match ups? Who does Florian fight if he wins the belt, considering he has already run through most of the top guys in the division?
As for Alves, while he has lost to Fitch, he is not the same fighter now. Alves is more dominant than before, and what if he loses to Fitch again? The above argument with Florian applies here to Alves.
However, I will agree that the UFC does need to give some other guys bigger fights, and the UFC does try to pass off bad fighters as the world's elite.
Who are these supposed "bad fighters" that the UFC tries to pass off as elite? I'd like to hear some examples. If you are gonna throw out an accusation like that, back it up.
Maybe you are considering Josh Hendricks from UFC 91? Dude was on a ten fight win streak, they never tried to say he was anything he wasn't as they made it clear it was his UFC debut and they didn't act like Gonzaga defeated Cro Cop again when it was over, so where they trying to say Josh was elite? No, were they giving him a shot or a chance to be up there, yes.
Where is the problem? Maybe you can hit me up with examples of bad fighters that UFC promotes as elite, because I don't see Kimbo Slice headlining their events anytime soon. I don't see Butterbean in the Octagon, or Giant Silva...etc.
How anyone can complain about the way Damien Maia has been brought along is baffling. They have given him good fights and he has put on stellar performances, Thiago Silva is the same. Chris Wilson hasn't done anything of note in the UFC besides lose to Fitch, but he oddly enough he didn't qualify as a bad fighter being promoted as elite either...
Confusing...
Rich your confused???? This is the way to see it....... What ever the UFC does is bad but if a little company does the same it's genuis. The only thing you really need to know from ramdeen blogs is he HATES THE UFC and everything not is better. Just call him out on it or they will take off you coments
I mean dont call him out on it or mention his lack of finding legit topics on his own or they will take off your comments
For anyone who is confused, I do not hate the UFC. I am simply amazed that the biggest promotion in the world fails to put on the biggest match ups in the world or sign big name free agents. Take the WEC for example, the show last night promoted a number of fighters in the division helping to create buzz for the future. On top of that they continue to aquire a tonne of top tier talent. The weird part is the WEC is owned by ZUFFA, the owners of the UFC. I actually think the UFC is an outstanding promotions with most of the best fighters in the world. I just feel for 50 bucks I shouldn't have to watch guys who are making their UFC debuts., and it is irrelevent wether it is an awesome fight or not, because I've seen awesome fights at the Iroquios MMA show in Hamilton, Ontario. That doesn't mean they should be on the main card of a PPV.
The UFC has signed more big name free agents then ANY other promotion. How you can look at their roster and claim there is some roster out there which is better is beyond me.
You still failed to address these so called bad fighters that UFC promotes as elite, but I actually figured you wouldn't because it would be far too hard to qualify that.
The UFC fails to put on the worlds biggest match ups? Once again, what are you talking about? Liddell-Silva? Who put that on? Was it Pride? Nope. Liddell-Couture x 3? Liddell-Ortiz? Ortiz-Shamrock? Penn-GSP? Franklin-Henderson? Hughes-GSP?...etc. I can go on and on here but the bottom line is, if the UFC has the fighters under contract and it is a "big fight", they WILL put it on.
You shouldn't even bother comparing the WEC to the UFC because everything you said about the WEC, the UFC has already. Promote fighters in different weight classes to help create buzz? Check, that is why you have so called "bad fighters" making their debut on PPV against known fighters, or would you prefer that all fighters are handled the way Fitch was brought up? Aquire a ton of top tier talent? Check, do I even have to run this down? Go look at the rankings and come back and tell me through all weight divisions combined, UFC fighters dominate them.
And just so I am clear here, you would rather see fights like Diego vs. Kos on PPV then Chris Wilson vs. Jon Fitch? Like it or not, that was Wilson's UFC debut. Or maybe you prefer Starnes vs. Quarry over Gouveia vs. Reljic? Once again Relijic's debut and had it not been on PPV, would we even know that this guy is a good undefeated fighter who took home fight of the night honors?
Or maybe you prefer how we were treated to a never ending set of Middleweight fights at WEC 36, a division that everyone watching knew was folding so none of the fights meant anything while they left the FOTN off TV in Cowboy and Razor Rob?
For 50 bucks, I want to see entertaining fights. I could understand your argument if they were pitting two people making their debut against each other, but that usually isn't how it happens. I'd rather see exciting fights then to watch 2 "big name fighters" that may be too hesitant to engage because they want to protect their "name" or record.
With all this said, I actually LOVE the WEC but to say it is somehow better then the UFC is, is completely out of perspective when you think about how many shows the WEC runs a year vs. how many the UFC run and STILL put on top fights, introduce new fighters and put on meaningful fights to the weight classes.
Hey Rich, again I think you are still confused about my comments. I've never called anyone on the UFC roster a bad fighter, so right there I've addressed that point. The second point about match making is somewhat flawed as well. Silva vs. Liddell was part of their year end show which was modelled after Pride's shockwave show, and with that being said lets look at the match ups from Pride's last year end show
Fedor Emeianenko vs. Mark Hunt
Josh Barnett vs. Minotauro Nogueira
Takanori Gomi vs.Mitsuhiro Ishida
Gilbert Melendez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri
Shogun Rua vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura
Shinya Aoki vs. Joachim Hansen
James Thompson vs.Hidehiko Yoshida
Akhiro Gono vs Yuki Kondo
Then you talk about big match up's, well every major MMA organization put on "Big" fights for example.
Strikeforce-Gilbert Melendez vs. Josh Thomson,Cung Le vs. Frank Shamrock, Phil Baroni vs. Frank Shamrock
Cage Rage-Anderson Silva vs. Lee Murray, Matt Lindland vs. Nino Schembri
Affliction-Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia, Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort, Andrei Arlovski vs. Fedor Emelianenko
WEC-Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver, Carlos Condit vs. Brock Larson, Jamie Varner vs. Rob McCullough
Elite XC-Jake Shields vs. Paul Daley, Robbie Lawler vs. Ninja Rua, Kimbo vs. Tank
My point about this is the UFC has a responsibilty to give nothing but top matches within the boundaries and mind set of
exciting match ups and internal rankings, for example, at the last show they put Gabriel Gonzaga who a little over a year ago
fought for the heavyweight title against Josh Hendricks, a man who was making his UFC debut. Gonzaga has faced some of the world's best fighters including including Team Quest member and BJJ standout Fabiano Scherner, Cro Cop and Fabricio Werdum while Hendricks' highest profile opponent was Travis Wiuff, who he lost to.
You also state that the UFC already does the things that the WEC does, well, at the last event they (WEC) broke down the featherweight division, so people watching at home could see who the top guys are. I don't recall a time where the UFC
showcased who and where everyone is in each weight class to create a buzz, so when guys win we know they are inching closer to a title shot. As for top talent, top fighters should only be fighting top fighters, ask them and they will tell you that's what they want. Chris Wilson had an awesome debut against the number two man in the welterweight line-up, the problem is, it seems that only the hardcore fans know who Jon Fitch is and to the casual fan Fitch is just some guy that beat Chris Wilson, spoiling the fact that Wilson put up a helluva fight against a legit guy. If Wilson had have instead debuted on a fight night against Josh Burkman, Jonathon Goulet or Luke Cummo which would've done alot more for his profile.
I've also stated in the past the UFC has alot of the best fighters in the world, but they don't have all of the best fighters.
Heavyweight-Fedor Emelianenko, Josh Barnett, Tim Sylvia, Andrei Arlovski, Alistair Overeem
Lightheavyweight-Ricardo Arona, Rafael Cavalcante
Middleweight-Jacare, Matt Lindland, Robbie Lawler, Gegard Mousasi, Vitor Belfort
Welterweight-Jake Shields, Paul Daley, Nick Diaz
Lightweight-Tatsuya Kawajiri, Josh Thomson, Takanori Gomi, Gilbert Melendez, Shinya Aoki, Joachim Hansen, Eddie Alvarez
No one can predict a fight of the night, it could be a dark match like the Swanson/Takaya or the Goulet/Hironaka fight. Every fighter wants to put on their version of a fight of the night, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. Rob McCullough for example was a fighter the WEC hyped up and then lost his title to a relative WEC newcomer Varner, after that he had a less than spectacular televised match up with Kenneth Alexander coupled with the fact that in Jake Rosholt's contract it states that his fights are all to be televised.
I totally agree with your statement about top guys not wanting to engage so they can protect thier record but real fighters fight. Randy didn't fight Brock conservatively, Minotauro and Barnett were wars, GSP dominated Fitch ect.ect
I agree that the UFC does an awesome job putting on great main events but for the amount of money MMA fans dish out throughout the course of a year I expect more.
Thanks for your comments.
