With promotions springing up all over the place, and fighters moving from one promotion to the next, I've decided to compile a list of fighters that may do big things in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.
Here it is, in no particular order.
Mark Munoz
In addition to training with former WEC featherweight champion Urijah
Faber, Munoz was a two time All American wrestler and NCAA wrestling
champion. The undefeated fighter only
has five bouts under his belt, but his drive to one day become a world champion
is evident. After talks that the WEC's heavier weight classes may be abolished,
the move to ZUFFA's "Big Daddy" promotion (UFC) maybe the perfect fit for the
Filipino; seeing how the UFC wants to establish their brand in the south east
Asian country. Munoz with the help of Brandon Vera and TUF season 8 veteran
Phillipe Nover would be exactly what the doctor ordered.
Wilson Reis
Elite XC champion and Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt, Reis is a star on
the rise up until the demise of Elite XC. In his last bout against Abel Cullum
(Another MMA stud) Reis looked spectacular, showcasing his grappling prowess.
With the WEC's Featherweight and Bantamweight division slowly becoming among the
best in the world, Reis would be the perfect addition giving the WEC some
serious depth.
Mike Ricci
Tristar gym product Mike Ricci is a fighter making waves in the Canadian
MMA scene. He sports an undefeated
record having competed in both TKO and XMMA. The explosive lightweight has
received endorsements from both Patrick Cote and Georges St-Pierre stating he is
one of their best training partners. Tristar gym trainer Firas Zahabi told The
Fight Network Mike Ricci is the future.
Antonio Silva
Bigfoot Silva is a fighter that has enough credibility that any promotion
would salivate over the thought of acquiring his services. The ATT member and
BJJ black belt is the first and only man to hold the Elite XC heavyweight title,
an accolade that would serve him well in a north American or Japanese promotion.
Sporting a near perfect 11-1 record 10 of which were finishes, "Bigfoot" could
be the answer to the UFC's prayers as legit heavyweights always seem to pull in
big numbers.
Alexandre "Xande"
Ribeiro
Ribeiro made his MMA debut in September of 2008 and showed incredible
diversity, showcasing punches and kicks and as well as good conditioning and an
impressive clinch game disposing of his opponent by TKO. The Toronto BJJ instructor is one of the
world's elite grapplers, holding the black belt gold medal in the World jiu
jitsu championship and 2007 ADCC title.
Hatsu Hioki
The Japanese fighter may not be new to the sport of MMA, but he has yet
to fight consistently in a major promotion (One fight in Pride Bushido). With an
impressive 17-3-0 record, Hioki is slowly becoming recognized as one of the best
featherweights on the planet. An extremely active fighter competing six times in
the last year Hioki has very well rounded skills as he is able to finish fights
on the ground as well as standing. The tough as nails TKO champion would be a
perfect fit for the WEC and a match up with Jens Pulver could catapult him into
stardom.
TJ Grant
The East coast submission fighter has 13 wins all by
stoppage (12 by way of submission) His last three victories all have ties to the
UFC. Beau Baker, the last man to fall victim to Grants grappling prowess
defeated TUF alum Tommy Speer and his two previous challenges were Ultimate
Fighting Championship veterans. Grant
also stopped 5 time UFC participant Forrest Petz at TKO 35, as well as Chad
Reiner in June of 2008. Grant is ready for the big show and won't disappoint, as
he is focused and ready to tap out the rest of the division.
Rafael "Feijao"
Cavalcante
He trains with both UFC interim heavyweight champion Minotauro Noguiera
and UFC middleweight super stud Anderson "The Kingpin" Silva so right there,
that qualifies him for any big show looking for a legit 205 pounder. I think he
would be a great fit in the UFC considering outside of the ZUFFA owned promotion
the light heavyweight division is pretty thin, and when you consider all the
potential match ups it's a no brainer. He is 7 and 1 in his MMA career and the
one blemish comes from a disqualification, oh yeah! And, he's finished all of
his opponents.
Wow you just had to throw in a little UFC bashing at the end there. I was wondering what took you so long. The light heavyweight division is pretty thin. Ha thats a good one
