Kimbo Likely Took Fight for Financial Reasons

Sunrise, Fla. — The second-guessing regarding last night’s decision to substitute Seth Petruzelli in place of a medically disqualified Ken Shamrock in the main event of EliteXC and CBS’ “Saturday Night Fights” has already begun.

The main question being raised is why did Kimbo accept the fight considering there was little upside?

Well, I believe there was an upside for Team Kimbo and it was likely financial. While speaking with sources at the post-fight press conference for the event, they indicated to FiveOuncesOfPain.com that Slice received a “substantial” increase over the guarantee he was scheduled to make vs. Shamrock.

For a guy who used to fight unknowns in backyards for only a few thousand dollars, accepting a fight vs. Petruzelli probably made a lot more sense once EliteXC made him a financial offer he likely couldn’t refuse.

Sources indicated to Five Ounces of Pain that Kimbo’s camp initially refused to accept a bout vs. any opponent other than Shamrock before accepting the Petruzelli deal. Whether his management was legitimately concerned is uncertain, but you’d have to be a fool to say “Sure, we’ll take the fight” right off the bat and kill your negotiation leverage. Kimbo’s team got the best offer they could for their fighter.

You can look at it from a manager’s perspective and rationalize that it was a mistake because Kimbo didn’t prepare for Petruzelli and that Petruzelli wasn’t an established fighter, thus bringing little reward in exchange for assuming a high risk. From that perspective, it’s hard to argue to taking last night’s fight was a bad decision in hindsight. But that’s also a myopic viewpoint.

There’s another perspective to consider and that is the one of the fighter.

Kimbo is 34 with multiple children. Because of his late start in MMA, his shelf-life as a professional athlete is limited compared to others. He only has so long to make so much money. The goal is to garner big paydays and if EliteXC offered him a compensation package that he was already working towards, why not take it now as opposed to later?

Slice likely found himself in an all or nothing situation: either accept the higher offer or risk coming home with nothing. While I am sure EliteXC would have compensated him for his time to some extent, I seriously doubt that they would have paid him a full purse for not fighting.

It also be overlooked that Kimbo is also a fighter who has repeatedly stated that he’s never turned down a fight and that he’ll fight anyone, anywhere. When you talk the talk, you’re going to need to walk-the-walk.

Ego and pride also come into play. A manager’s job is to protect their fighter but there is a fine line that needs to be walked. If you tell your fighter not to take a fight on short notice because it’s too dangerous, you run the risk of your fighter feeling insulted because of a perception that you don’t believe in their ability.

And let’s be honest, Petruzelli is no world beater at this point. It’s not like he accepted a fight vs. a former Muay Thai champion or jiu-jitsu black belt. At this stage of the game, Slice should be taking on fighters of Petruzelli’s caliber. Granted, it’s better to have more notice so that you have proper time to prepare, but Petruzelli was also at the same disadvantage.

The fact that Kimbo was also fighting in his backyard cannot be overlooked. Many friends and family were in attendance and wanted to see him fight. There’s a chance he felt a sense of duty to go out there and put his best foot forward in light of the bad situation since another option had been presented to him.

Was last night’s decision the right call for Kimbo? It depends on what perspective you’re looking at if from.

If Kimbo wants anyone to reasonably expect him to be considered a fighter, then YES. He certainly made the right call. That's what a REALfighter does. They fight whomever is thrown infront of them, wherever and whenever. This sport isn't a democracy. If anyone had a legit disadvantage, it was Seth. An almost 30-pound disadvantage. But nobody saw him making a stink.

This fight proved what a lot of people suspected...Kimbo is nothing but a side show. Sure he sold tickets. All he really achieved was take away from the credibility of the sport, and tarnish the work of the world class, legitimate athletes you now find in MMA.
You make reference to Petruzelli's caliber...he is far more legitimate as a professional fighter than Kimbo...and I'd never even heard of him before that night. Let's be honest...Kimbo was being billed as the next big thing and he got knocked out in 14 seconds by an unknown he outweighed by 30 lbs.
Kimbo looked the part, and could talk shit with the best of them. The problem is he didn't pay his dues...sorry, backyard fights don't count. He never earned the hype so it was just a matter of time before the bubble burst.
He showed little respect for the real talent in MMA...did you notice he refused to touch gloves at the start of the fight? Now he's probably going to disappear...I just hope he doesn't bring Elite XC down with him. I'll bet Tito is rethinking signing with an organization destined for bankruptcy...

Why is no one giving Petruzelli any credit? Every article I have read has treated Kimbo like he was the victim here. But Petruzelli, who knocked a guy 30 pounds heavier and a division above him, has just been brushed off practically. If anything, Petruzelli was the one at a disadvantage, being asked to take a headlining fight against the company's biggest star, who like I said had 30 pounds on him. We need to give Petruzelli credit, call Petruzelli a man, and stop treating Kimbo like the victim. Kimbo talks the talk, but when it came to back it up he couldn't.

Potter...He should absolutely been given credit. I'd credit ANY guy stepping up to fight at such a substantial weight disadvantage. AND on short notice. People can gripe all the want about Petruzelli's fight record, but he's still a professional. When Hamell was pounding his face into hamburger in their UFC bout, he didn't tap out or panic. Even when you could clearly see his vision during the fight was severely limited. Even by the very, first round. Nor did Petruzerlli make a stink about having to fight someone else at the very last minute. To baby Kimbo for his loss, is to essentially ignore and undermine the accomplishment of Petruzelli under such harsh circumstances.

you have to admit the ref called the fight way too soon if you look at the video you can see he only landed a few punches on Kimbo he was hitting him in the shoulder and back of the head. If you've watched any of Kimbos fights you know that he can take a beating more then two punches in the face. How many fights has Kimbo lost before this? I can only think of one where he lost to Sean Cannon. I say every dog has his day but don't count Kimbo out now until he loses a fight where he gets Knocked out or Submited

Look. Let's be honest. Dana White stated it perfectly in his interview on Sportsnet. "Kimbo sucks". This whole thing just re-enforces that. It also makes the UFC look far superior. A guy who couldn't cut it with the UFC competition walks into Elite XC and knocks out their star in a matter of seconds. What does this say about the quality of fighter in Elite XC vs. UFC.

The problem with d.g.'s comments is that he is pulling for zuffa and hoping everyone else will fail.

So is he a Real fan of mma? No.

okay okay people... i definetley think that the ref called the fight way too quick, kimbo was trying to get up... after seth hit kimbo in the eye and he fell seth punched kimbo in the back of the head twice, now do you remember when kimbo fought tank he hit tank in the back of the head once and the same ref called time and warned kimbo... and in this fight did the ref even warn seth one time, hell no he didn't. so all in all kimbo can still be a contender and i think that his next fight should be against seth petruzelli...

hey, lets back up here. When Elite XC brought in this back yard brawler and called him the next big thing, it was a slap in the face of every MMA fighter out there who put in the years-blood-sweat and tears. You don't earn your stripes in the hood.

First of all, anyone who works hard and commits themselves to the MMA sport is not considered a side show. Kimbo most likely was approached about becoming an MMA fighter, the guy was already well known for his awsome backyard brawls. Kimbo never claimed he would be better than every fighter in the sport, therfor not hyping himself. Give credit where credit is due though, Kimbo is no slouch, and he is def. not the first fighter to get his chin tested and get knocked out. GSP was knocked out by Matt Serra, SHOCKING!!!!!! So dont be so hard on the guy and think about the criticism you dish out when you have such little knowledge of the sport of MMA.

DaddyVenom
Awesome back yard brawls? Are you kidding me? You want to give the guy credit for that? What has Kimbo done? Who has he beaten? And you are going to use the fact that I question Kimo's legitimacy to say I have little knowledge of MMA? I think we need some perspective here. There are lots of people in the world you are good fighters...go to any bar and I'm sure you'll see a few. This isn't about brawling...the days of Tank Abbott are long gone. If MMA wants to continue to have mainstream appeal it will be the legitimate athletes that pay the bills. Let's see what happens with Kimbo. I'm sure there's lot's of people out there that he can beat...and I'm sure there is a place in the world for an event where Kimbo beats up on nobody's. What I'm saying is that if he wants to test himself against the top talent out there he has a long way to go....

Kimbo is treated as a circus act, he has no experience in MMA, doesn't have a credible fighting background and is somehow the main event?

October 5, 2008 - 11:12 pm

Hey Wentzell,
I agree with you, I would love to see a couple other strong companies on the scene...the problem is that nobody is even coming close to the UFC right now. If your main event is Kimbo versus Ken...a relative unknown versus an old man who hasn't had a good showing in years, you are in trouble before the bell rings. Come on guys...were those good fights on that card? And Elite XC is courting Tito Ortiz...even he has had a pretty rough couple of years...

Did anyone notice the Kimbo looked like he didn't care to be there? There was no fire in his eyes etc etc. Besides, why not get your first perfessional loss out of the way now, and be able to put an asterik beside it* He took a suspect shot to the chin, ends up on the ground and makes absolutely no effort to cover up? I think he threw the fight as what better way to explain your first loss then by having the greatest excues "I wan't prepared to fight him" blah blah blah! Of course, I wasn't on the receiveing end of the punch, so I don't want to take anything away from Seth, but it just looked too funny the way it all went down.

First of all that fight was called way too quick. I was there and came home and watched it again. Seth hit him good and hurt him but that was no way a knock out. It was bad call. Even the officials watched the monitor in the cage several times and the ref was getting pissed at one of them when he called him out on it. Great rematch for more ticket sales. So Kimbo has at least 2 fights left Ken and Seth and then we can see if he is ready for pro fighting.

the happiest moment in my life seeing that bum go down like a sack of potatoes, hopefully we wont see that overhyped pos ever again, he shouldve had 2 loses now but hey seeing him lose to a guy 30 pounds lighter then him was awesome! i thought the rest of the card was decent and ginas fight was awesome

It was a lucky shot because it caught Slice in the temple region of the head. That and a kick to the groin, along with a punch in the bread basket will bring a man down anytime. A shot to the temple by Muhammad Ali on Liston got his career going. That was the weakest fight on the card. Kimbo and his management team should have walked away from the card if there was injury to Shamrock. What kind of moronic training was he doing? Shamrock has to change his training approach before a major fight. Who allows contact in training just days before the fight. You remember when he was a coach in TUF 5, he got his team to lift sandbags as training and it wiped out any team cohesiveness they had. He goes golfing while his hanger-ons trained his team. Whata joke it was to see. This might be the end of MMA on a primetime network.

1. Seth did get warned by the ref about the punch to the back of the head. If you didn't hear the ref, go back and listen again.

2. Kimbo was so out of it he started to grapple the ref. Kimbo was not OK to continue.

3. Petrazelli is the Man, and should be pushed as a result of this fight. The truth is that he's most likely be punished for derailing EliteXC's money train.

4. I'm a fan of Zuffa yes, but I also like EliteXC, Strikeforce, Affliction, and I watch a ton of fights on HDNet. The whole Dream Tournament was F'n great, better then most of what the US organizations put on their shows.

kimbo got what was expected, he fought somebody that he wasnt protected from. shamrock is 44, diminished skills, and looking for a few more paydays off of his rep.. seth, is a younger professional, that is still evolving with the sport. it just goes to show you cant just show up after a year or so of training and expect to succeed against true professionals. he's too old, and wont have time to develop his skills in time to compete before his age catches up to him. THE CIRCUS HAS LEFT TOWN!

Mr.Punchy is right, Kimbo does not want to be the poster boy at all. He was relieved to lose. When a major promotion thrusts a fighter into the position that EXC thrusted Kimbo into, this is what happens. He was not ready for this level of pressure or hype, compitition or lifestyle. It's almost the same as Brock Lesnar getting a title shot so early. The UFC is capitalizing on Brock's star power the same way EXC did with Kimbo, but, Brock Lesnar is a world class amature wrestler and a huge name in pro-wrestling. He can deal with the pressure that a main event can bring, Kimbo just is'nt ready for that pressure.

Kimbo is great. His story of life is one that unbiased people would admire. He is fighting very good to me. That fight should not have been stopped the way it was. The winner was throwing lots of illegal punches and the referee maybe did not see. But Kimbo will be back and will beat lots of other fighters including Petrocelli. I also believe that there is a lot of unwarranted jealousy over Kimbo. He is just a man trying to feed his family the best way he knows. No real reason to be jealous of guy. I am a great supported of Kimbo.

I think the UFC and Brock Lesnar is a much different situation. Lesnar is a world class athlete who competed at the highest level of his sport, in a well respected program for years. He has also been well prepared for the atmosphere of professional MMA by his time in the WWE. There is no doubt that he has the potential. That being said I still don't think he's ready for a title shot. I would love to see him fight Chiek Kongo first. The UFC is taking advantage of his star power, which is a gamble...but it's a better gamble than Kimbo. The UFC has a huge pool or talent in their stable to fall back on in Lesnar flops...

I agree with Jim and Paul completely. Kimbo has a great story, and it's unfair to put a guy like Kimbo in the position he was in. He had the pressure of the promotion on his back! Now the pressure should be lifted, and Kimbo can work his way back up the ranks like everyone else. Did you see the smile on his face during the post-fight interview? That said it all. People make fun of Kimbo because he was made famous on YouTube......then he almost became a household name fighting for ProElite! Yea I admire him.......he's got balls.

Evan, you made the point I was trying to get at all along, Kimbo is not the guy that should headline EXC. I think it's high time we all start talking about the best of the best again.....Silva, Fedor, St. Pierre, B.J. etc.......So here we go. Do you think Jake Sheilds stands a chance against GSP? Who will win, GSP or B.J. Penn? Do you think Anderson Silva could beat Forrest Griffen? Would Fedor desrtoy Randy? Will Randy beat Brock? Is Chuck finished? Who wins Silva-Rampage 3? Will Rashad Evans beat Forest Griffen? Is this the star power you were looking for? Lets here it then!

Wentzell...You're a fucking idiot! You ever bothered reading any of my posts before this one? OBVIOUSLY NOT. Because if you did, you would know, like many on this board already know, I AM ONE OF WHITE'S MOST VOCAL CRITIQUE . I've had friends fight in numerous organizatons. Why the FUCK would I push only for Zuffa, when it essentially means they'd be put out of work, because they'd have nobody to fight for? You're an assumptive asshole, who knows SHIT. Not only about myself, but about the sport of MMA. Don't think, jackass. It's clearly NOT your strong point.

Go back to watching fuckin' Pro-Wrestling cunt! Your fuckin' poison to MMA fans just like Lovranski and pro-wrestling are to the fight network. Fuck off, bury your head in the sand, and wait for your fuckin' prom!

I have no loyalty to any MMA faction; I’m just a MMA fan. CBS promoted a FREE card on TV and I watched it. I watched 2 women hug each other for 9 min, ok some little striking. I watched Andrei Arlovski knock out a overweight guy who thinks laying on top of someone with all you weight not doing any thing is a dominate position. I watched a mouthy Brit with striking get man handled on the mat for the title, and I watched the Silverback who I never thought I would see again on TV let alone headliner, knock out the seconded coming of Christ with a jab and yes Chri…..I mean Kimbo was out on his way down. And for all you Kimbo lovers out there who thinks the fight was stopped early give you head a shake. When you lying on you side on the mat as stiff as a board not even defending yourself………well the fight is over. It was when Kimbo some how got to his back with his hands down still not defending himself, is when the ref stopped the fight cause then there would have been some serious damage done to Elite’s ONLY STAR. I’m sorry but that was just embarrassing and now all the Elite fans have to look forward to Tito signing up. WOW. Well as long as their shows are free what’s there to complain about
