While Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson may have lost in the main event of EliteXC and CBS’ Saturday Night Fights against Seth Petruzelli as a result of a 14 second TKO, he still managed to walk away with $500,000.
FiveOuncesOfPain.com confirmed the information after obtaining copies of signed bout agreements from the Florida State Boxing Commission.
Petruzelli, who had originally been scheduled to appear on the undercard vs. Aaron Rosa in a light heavyweight bout, earned a total of $50,000 for the winning effort. EliteXC, which presumably had to negotiate a new salary agreement with Petruzelli after promoting him to the main event, paid him a guarantee of $35,000 and then an additional $15,000 as a win bonus.
Below are the salary figures for the notable fighters involved with Saturday’s show. It should be noted that the salary figures below do not take in consideration any bonuses the fighters might have received as compensation outside of their individual bout agreements.
EliteXC “Heat” Payroll Figures:
– Kimbo Slice: $500,000 vs. Seth Petruzelli: $50,000 ($35,000 to show and $15,000 to win). Slice could have earned an additional $100,000 win bonus if he had defeated Petruzelli.
– Jake Shields: $50,000 ($40,000 to show and $10,000 to win) vs. Paul Daley: $12,000. Daley could have earned an addition $12,000 win bonus had he defeated Shields.
– Andrei Arlovski: $500,000 vs. Roy Nelson: $80,000. No win bonus awarded to either fighter. It is believed that the purses of both Arlovski and Nelson were underwritten by Affliction Entertainment but the documents we have received from the Florida State Boxing Commission does not confirm that.
– Gina Carano: $25,000 ($15,000 to show and $10,000 to win) vs. Kelly Kobold: $6,000. Kobold would have earned $12,000 with a victory over Carano.
– Benji Radach: $30,000 ($15,000 to show and $15,000 to win) vs. Murilo Rua: $35,000. Rua would have earned an additional $35,000 as a win bonus had he defeated Radach.
– Cristiane Justino (aka “Cris Cyborg”): $8,000 ($4,000 to show and $4,000 to win) vs. Yoko Takahashi: $2,000. Takahashi would have earned an additional $2,000 had she defeated Cyborg.
– Conor Heun: $5,000 ($2,500 to show and $2,500 to win) vs. Edson Berto: $6,000. Berton would have earned an additional $6,000 had he been able to defeat Heun.
what happened with aron rosa s payday, the guy trained for his fight and his opponent changed, not his fault. Shamrock lost out and did not get paid, but did rosa make anything for his trouble?
Here's why Elite XC is in trouble...UFC 88 payouts...Chuck Liddell 500, 000....Dan Henderson 250 000, Rashad Evans 120 000 plus 60 000 bonus, Rich Franklin 100 000...look at the caliber of these fighters. There is no way Kimbo is worth that kind of money...not now anyway. If that is how you are spending your money as a company...that's the value you expect for your dollar...your days are numbered...
I don't think that Kimbo got payed for his abillities. He got payed because he was the main reason people tuned in. Knowing that he'll draw a big number, and he did, they payed him that sum since they would make alot of money on the add revenue due to a highly rated show. I can't speak for everybody, but I would not have watched the show if I did not want to see the circus. Just a side note, the UFC makes tons of money on the backs of the fighters. So one can argue that the UFC underpays it's fighter. Everbody else overpays their fighters just to get a decent card with some names on it. They have to just to try and take a run at the UFC. I beleive that the other companies should not try to be number 1but they should strive to the number 2 company first, then when they have good numbers and solid books shoukd they go after the UFC.
I don't care what anyone says- Kimbo IS NOT worth 35,714.29 dollars per second
I suppose you could argue that the UFC underpays its fighters, but since the UFC is the ONLY organization turning a profit perhaps that argument is a bit premature. Sure, we tune in to see the fighters, not Dana White, but if the UFC was not so good at promoting the spoort where would it be today? Give the guy a break, he took an organizatio on the brink of bankruptcy with a product described as human cockfighting and managed to turn it into a successfull company with state oversight and prime time exposure. Perhaps he knows what he is doing? I agree with Bob though, aim for number 2, feed off the UFC castoffs and up and coming fighters and follow the UFC popularity to position yourself as a strong competitor in the future. Thats a great medium term business strategy for a new product.
Hey Bob,
I think you hit the nail on the head. Kimbo didn't get paid for his abilities. All of the the people who tuned in to see him...do you think that they will tune in next time? The problem is that MMA is a sport, not a broadway show. The fans that are going to pay the bills in the long run are the ones that tune in to watch professional athletes in a legitimate competition. It can't always be a circus. Look at the UFC in the early days...sure it had a following, but it didn't have a chance to go mainstream. Dana White made the right changes and he put the UFC in the mainstream, alongside other legitimate sports like baseball and football. I watch sports news and I see MMA reports regularily...that wasn't the case a couple of years ago...the whole sport has benefited...
I'd let anyone beat on me for 14 seconds for a half million bucks.
Kimbo's pay was based on his "reputation", and drawing capacity. Plain and simple.
It's the same as in hollywood. If you are a big name, you are payed huge money upfront, because people will watch just because you're in it. If the movie happens to tank, that doesn't matter to the star... In this case, Kimbo was paid to show up, his name put the butts in the seats, and got people to tune into the broadcast. The fact that he is a one dimensional fighter, didn't matter.
This is horse Sh*t.
Petruzelli announced his earnings to be in the 6 FIGURES earlier this morning during his live interview here on a local radio station. Also stated that kimbo earned 1 million but could not verify the exact numbers.
Its just another example of how the media is bullsh*tting the public. You better believe that the ELITE XC promoters tried to get seth to stand up with kimbo for that main event fight and Seth made the mistake of linking that out on another public interview.
Hey D.G.! Got any Pot? No? Bang! Pow! Ker-Plunk!
Sorry, man. I can (and did) take three potheads in a back alley on my own, just fine thanks. I mean, what were they thinking at the time when decided to man-up? "Ya. This heavily tattooed biker stepping off his motorcycle looks like an easy target.". Yup. That would be the first target I'd pick, when looking to roll someone. And they say pot doesn't affect one's decision-making abilities!
D.G. You may not smoke the Green, but you mos-def smoke the crack. Three guy's? C'mon! This is a lie. We all know it. Oh, and it's not Ya, it's spelled Yea! To much crack today? Forgot how uber-intelligent you are? Yea.
