New UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar’s former employers with World Wrestling Entertainment felt compelled to issue a statement in regards to his victory via their official website.
“In a stunning upset, Brock Lesnar became the first man to capture both the WWE Championship and the UFC Heavyweight Championship when he defeated UFC fan favorite Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture on Saturday night in Sin City,” the release begins, incorrectly referring to Lesnar’s victory as an “upset,” as he was favored to win by all of the major sportsbooks in Las Vegas.
The self-promotional release continued, even trying to portray this past Saturday’s successful UFC 91 event in a negative light.
“Critics have noted that many of the fights on the UFC pay-per-view ended in the first round, leaving UFC producers scrambling to fill the three-hour event with content,” the WWE.com release states. “The dearth of hearty competition left many viewers to watch less prestigious under-card fights and only served to bolster claims that UFC pay-per-view events can often be a ‘crap shoot’ in regards to filling the full three hours.”
The release ended with the WWE trying to position itself as playing a role in Lesnar’s win, in spite of the fact that he resigned from his multi-million dollar contract with the promotion over four years ago under a great deal of acrimony.
“For his part, Lesnar took the encouragment of the WWE Universe and the hard lessons forged during his fiery time at WWE and showed UFC and the world why he is not only a man of mettle but also a former three-time WWE Champion,” concluded the release.
It's not only the WWE who are calling this an upset. Many news outlets and fans are calling this match an upset, so to fault the WWE for calling it an upset seems kinda odd. The rest of what the WWE said is a bunch of BS, and that is what you should have focused on.
I think it's really good when the ufc shows some of the under card fights. They should show all the fights, sometimes the under card fights are better then some of the main card fights. As for brock lesner I think he's a joke! I'm not saying that he's not good or that he won't be great, but he didn't deserve to have a title shot so soon, since was only 1-1 in the ufc 2-1 overall. There are other heavy-weights that deserved a shot before him. But it's all about the money!!
Yeah, poster number 1 is right. I have heard several other media outlets call this an upset besides WWE. They said so in the local news out here as well as on Fox Sports Net and ESPN. Also, you can say all you want about WWE but realistically speaking the only reason that anybody gave a damn about this fight or Lesnar is because of Lesnar's time in the Word Wrestling Entertainment Brand.
Oh yeah... and let's not forget about the constant pot-shots that Dana White has taken at Professional Wrestling over the last few years. I just can't fault WWE for this!
I think that it's a cheap attemp from WWE to capitalize on Lesnar succes . If anyone remembers Vince did everythig in his power to keep Brock from wrestling anywere in the US when he left WWE to try out for the NFL . What is the next step ? Is the WWE going to sell some Brock merchandise ? This is just another WWE attemp to make some bucks of someone else good fortunes in an other organisation . Lets face facts , upset or not , Lesnar beat Couture . Yeah other guys might of deserved a title shot . But Brock did do the job and win , only time will tell if he his a long runnig champ or a flash in the pan !!!
Lesnar won that bout clean! He rocked Couture with those shots to the head -prior to the glancing blow and mat beating - I don't think Lesnar will hold the title long though judging by the previous loss to Mir. I am now excited about watching Lesnar lose and might even buy the PPV!
Smells like another Brock Lesnar DVD may be in the works. "Here comes the Pain II" which will feature Lesnar matches that he lost, and other wrestlers makin fun of him.
There's always baseball, brock
Lesnar is still lame n I can't wait fir either Mir or noguiera to make him tap like a lil bitch so the belt can go back to a true mixed martial artist
Why would anyone pay any attention to the musings of a childrens entertainment organization? I mean that's what the WWE is right? A kind of human circus that really appeals to children? Why are they commenting on, and why does anyone give a shit, about an acrobatic stage show that is designed for children and the brain impaired? WWE please stop attempting to put yourself anywhere near the SPORT of MMA, you just look silly.
WWE= "attention whores".
why would John Christopher be reading a story that is posted on a board "that appeals to children"? If you don't give a shit, please post on the boxing or MMA boards. please stop posting anywhere near pro wrestling boards. You just look silly.
There are fighters who will give Lesnar trouble. Hopefully Dana the prick has the gonads to make the fight and not coddle him. To Brock's credit, I don't think he'll stand for being protected. He will definitely be a fighting champion who will stand for nothing less than fighting the best.
The story was posted on the MMA board. You are correct in assuming I would not read the wrestling board. Unless I were labotamized. I do give Lesnar full credit for coming into the UFC and, having been thrown to the wolves, survived, and now seems to be flourishing. I also really wouldn't post on the boxing board as I don't think much of boxing either. I respect the sport, but I'm just not a fan. Geez, I do kind of sound silly.
Sorry John, it seems the the people who run this website feel that MMA fans give a shit what the WWE or Vince the prick think when in fact most pro wrestling fans couldn't give a shit what he thinks. Its barely a wrestling story let alone a an MMA story. Must be a slow week at TFN when they have to post such a meaningless story on two boards.
Lesner was never thrown to the wolves. Dana tried as best he could to set him up with easy fights but Brock wanted to compete against the best MMA had to offer. I don't know how long his title reign will be but it will be eventful.
As for your insults toward pro wrestling, each to their own.
hey Mr bubs you fucking poser it sounds like you don't no jack about martial arts ' lessnar just fought 3 times this year against the top guys ' what else can the guy do to prove himself.
I suppose it is true that the UFC had a bit of trouble filling the threee hour card because of all the early finnishes. But thats what can happen when the fights are REAL. When they are scripted, soap opera style WWE fights I suppose you can make sure the whole PPV is full. Of course if a wrestling card sucks is because its planned that way. Lets see, Brock Lesnar vs Randy Couture in a REAL fight or a WWE necrophelia skit. Anyone need three guesses why I am posting comments on the MMA board instead of the wrestling board?
It seems that everyone will agree that up until the 3 minute mark of the second round, the fight was extremely close and competitive. Why hasn't anyone given consideration to a re-match between Couture and Lesner. Christ, if Brock can get a title shot after only 2 fights in the Octagon, surely someone of Randy's pedigree deserves an instant re-match. Randy still has a few fights left on his contract. Or is Dana the prick afraid that his new meal ticket might get beat?
I'm sorry. Since when was Herring a "top guy"? They guy shows up out of shape for ever fight!
I agree with D.G. Heath Herring came into the UFC way overhyped and so far he's put on some rather pathetic performances. Jesus, I can't beleive he lasted as long as he did against Lesnar. I do think Randy should really consider retiring, go out while he's still has so much dignity. The last thing I want to see any older fighter turn into Ken Shamrock. Fucking Ken, he turned himself into a joke when he could have retired gracefully, training fighters and commentating. Randy needs to be careful and not turn himself into a punching bag that can sell tickets on victories of the past. Chuck Liddell also needs to watch out for this.
The Brock Lesnar win over Randy Couture is a complete farce. I wouldn't so upset that Lesnar won the title if he had at least 8 fights under his belt. I found that Lesnar never paid his dues to the sport of MMA. I don't think he will completely dominate MMA as other people think he will Lesnar will lose focus and quit like he did once before. In my opinion, Lesnar's victory set back the sport to the era of the early 90's when the only place that allowed MMA was Utah, the home of bigamy. Legitimacy and integrity are very important aspects to sports that try to achieve acceptance by the masses. This was a rush job and a con job masterminded by Dana White. Every sport needs a star to hitch up their wagon to, like Ruth to baseball, Gretzky to Hockey, Woods in golf and Jordan for basketball. Lesnar is not the star because he lacks charisma and integrity. I guess Lesnar took up MMA to pay his bills. At least, he won't ride around in a shitty red car anymore. So, who is the next contender Triple H, John Cena, maybe the BIg Show? How about Brad Pitt he played an underground fighter in the movie "The Fight Club". Maybe he will quit to join the NHL to become an enforcer, if he can skate. Brock Lesnar will probably joins the ranks of forgotten MMA fighters like Bob Sapp, Tank Abbot and Kimbo Slice. One dimensional fighters that had no other capliblities in their arsenal. I don't like what the future holds for MMA. And i was just starting to love the sport.
You were just starting to love the sport? Why dont you just fuck right off the fuckin' bandwagon you fuckin' newbee! Sapp, Tank, Kimbo or Brad pit never had a fuckin' world title shot against Randy Couture, and won. Just shut your fuckin' pie-hole and go back to jerking off while watching WWE at your mom's house you fuckin' wannabe bitch muther-fucker!
MMA will be just fine. Lesner is a phenomal athlete and he won the fight. THe more money the company makes means the more money fighters get paid. Lesner is just that talented a athlete.
B.P.M. You dude are delusional. Just because you consider yourself a fan of MMA, you can talk like a MMA fighter. You better take Lesnar's dick out of your mouth when you try to sound like a tough guy. You sound like a pathetic loser. Your mama never gave you enough love when you were little or was it too much? Come shut my piehole for me, you fatherless bastard.
Funny, everyone forgets that lesnar was a legit phenom in amateur wretling.. his time in wwe only accentuated the fact that amongst a bunch of pretty boys he was a legit athlete. Maybe he shouldn't have gotten a title shot so fast.. that's entirely debatable.. the thing is.. he won. So the point is moot.If he retains the title for anything beyond 3 fights.. will he be taken seriously? he had better, because there are not many heavyweights who retain more than 3 times before getting beat up.As for all the childish trash talk.. from a bunch of out of shape, internet junkies who couldn't fight open a bag of potato chips.. the talk around gym in Toronto and the fight community.. u know.. the people who actually know something about the sport..or for that matter getting off their lazy, pimply, fat asses... is that this legitimizes lesnar immediately. Everyone wanted him to fail and he didn't.. it's not a kimbo slice issue where the first legit fightter that comes along knocks himout.. it's Couture for goddsake. The question becomes how much of a gauntlet will lesnar have to run.. maybe long, maybe short.. but it's time to treat him with some earned respect.
Brock Lesnar earned some respect from me because he wanted to fight the best in the sport, he's trying to be the best, and as a fan that's all I'd ask for from a fighter. Now is he the best? No fucking way, but he's trying, and he trains his ass off, and that's cool. Hopefully he can develope some sick ass Judo or Muy Thai or smoething because he would be more of an "all around" fighter, not just some huge chunk of dude that's just gonna try and beat your face in. I don't see this as a "gambler's" upset. I personally wouldn't have put money on Couture, even though I wanted him to win. It's an "upset" in the fans eyes because I don't think they wanted to see Randy lose, but the fact is he lost, and he said Brock got a "lucky" shot. I lost some respect for Couture when he said that. He got hit, he went down, and he got beat, plain and simple and he should've manned up and said he got beat down, not that Brock got "lucky". Brock is sloppy and his size and power outwiegh his technique and skill greatly, but he has potential, and I think the WWE see's that and they see an oppurtunity to make money, WHORES. The only thing that the WWE could've given Lesnar is a "stage attitude", he likes to entertain and that's what the UFC is for. Yes I believe the UFC it is a REAL sport, perhaps the most of all, but it exists for entertainment and Brock Lesnar has experience entertaining, BUT that does not excuse his lack of MMA skills. He didn't diserve the shot at the title, but he has it, that's done, now he needs to work to keep it and really prove that he's not a bottle rocket. Honestly if he comes against someone that can handle his strength and has submission skills, much like MIr, he will lose his title quickly. He has a long way to go before he can get the MMA skills he needs. I don't see Brock keeping his title for more than one fight, unless the UFC pulls some bitch shit and throws him easy fights to keep the money train chuggin' along, although I'm not sure that he'd take an easy fight, he wants a challenge, he want's to get hit, he wants to FIGHT, and that is a good start, but he is a lap or two behind a lot of guys in the UFC and he still has a lot to prove.
