Reports by BloodyElbow.com and UK-based tabloid newspaper The Sun surfaced last weekend indicated that UFC officials were looking to promote a main event between Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture for UFC 99 to be held in Germany on June 13.
However, during this week’s edition of “MMA Live,” Franklin McNeil of ESPN.com and the Newark Star-Ledger reported that bout agreements for a potential fourth fight have not been presented to either fighter. McNeil indicated that while the potential matchup has been discussed, neither Liddell or Couture are particularly interested in fighting one another again.
With the UFC looking to make a splash for its German debut, McNeil indicated that it’s possible that both Couture and Liddell will be featured on the card in separate bouts.
Liddell has not fought since suffering a second round knockout loss against Rashad Evans in September atUFC 88. The defeat marked Liddell’s third loss in his last four fights. There have been some rumors that his next bout could be a superfight vs. current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva but published reports indicate that serious talks in regard to making the match have not taken place.
Couture returned to active fighting after a year and a half layoff on Nov. 15 at UFC 91. Facing former NCAA heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, Couture lost the heavyweight title following a second round TKO.
Although I'm sure this would be a great fight, that would probably sell out, I think we've been down this road before. I don't think a fourth fight would mean anything for either fighter in their rankings, and the heavyweight division might not be the right place for either of these guys. I would love to see Lesnar fight the winner of Mir vs Nogueira, and Couture to take on the loser. I think that Jui Jitsu guys pose the biggest threat to Lesnar, so Nogueira would be an interesting matchup. As far as Liddell, how about a match with Lyoto Machida, or Thiago Silva?
Is this going to be like a Ric Flair vs Sting gig, circa WCW? When they had, I don't know, a BILLION matches? Like, why? There's NOTHING to gain on either side. Regardless of who wins. Randy has nothing left to prove. His track record speaks for itself, and his place is cemented in MMA history. At almost 40 years old, Chuck isn't about to change his fighting style or camp anytime soon. Which, ironically enough, is exactly what he needs to do, if he wants to squeeze a few more years out of his career. I think both should retire.
These guys are running out of time FAST and pitting them against each other at this point in their careers would be a huge waste, considering how many other interesting match-ups the UFC could explore. The winner of this fight gains very little and the loser gets buried.
couture is a good announcer, liddel is alittle mumble-mouthed though
I think I agree with the retirement idea...I would hate to see either of these guys go the Ken Shamrock route...
Retirement is definitely looming for these guys but best case scenario would be if they both chose to retire after winning their respective UFC 99 bouts. They go out on top and solidify their fighting legacy. Shamrock on the other hand, diminished his considerably which is a shame because he was ahead of his time for a while there in the mid 90's but then MMA caught up to him and because he was passed his prime when it did, he wasn't able to adapt and it passed him by. He spent the last few years of what would have been his prime, in WWF because MMA wasn't paying in the 90's and he was a family man, etc...It's a shame. He's a good man.
I agree that Shamrock is a good man...I meant no disrespect. I just think he's making poor career decisions. He needs to give up on the ring and either focus on coaching and developing a good camp, or becoming a better commentator. There is no doubt that the guy is a legend...
