But might St. Pierre be involved with two superfights next year?
According to UFC President Dana White, a superfight between St. Pierre and current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva might not be out of the question.
During a press conference several weeks ago in Toronto to promote UFC 94, White didn’t rule out the possibility of Silva vs. St. Pierre when the potential matchup was raised by a member of the media.
“Do you think there is a chance that the winner of this fight will get Anderson Silva?,” the reporter asked.
“I think if Georges St. Pierre wins this fight he’ll get Anderson Silva,” White responded to the delight of fans in attendance at the press conference.
White later added that “…Georges St. Pierre has the ability to beat Anderson Silva in a pound-for-pound title fight.”
A notable absence from White’s answer was Penn, the promotion’s current lightweight champion. However, it appears that Penn might have post-UFC 94 plans of his own.
In regards to Penn’s post-UFC 94 future, he deferred all questions about a possible lightweight matchup against Kenny Florian to his website, BJPenn.com, but did express an interest in a third fight vs. Matt Hughes.
When asked by a fan why he would want to fight an aging Hughes, Penn responded with a question of his own, asking “Wouldn’t you want another shot at someone that kicked your ass?”
Penn upset Hughes for the UFC welterweight title in January of 2004 at UFC 46 after submitting him with a rear naked choke at 4:39 of round 1. The native Hawaiian then left the UFC over a bitter contract dispute before returning vs. St. Pierre at UFC 58 in March of 2006.
Following a loss to Pierre, Penn then fought Hughes in a rematch at UFC 63, with Hughes getting the better of Penn this time around following a third round TKO.
**IF** St Pierre can get by Penn. But then these champions have responsibilities to the contenders in their own weight divisions and if 2 of St-Pierre's 3 fights in 09 are against champions from other weight classes, where does that leave fighters like Thiago Alves, to a lesser degree Diego Sanchez and who knows, maybe even Jake Shields?? And it isn't as much that they're getting shafted at a chance at the prestige of being champion, but it's the championship MONEY. And how long is Florian gonna have to wait for Penn? He dominated Stephenson in more impressive fashion than Penn had AND was arguably that division's top contender even before going into the fight. Yet because of the time line between his last fight and Penn's next availability, Florian will likely have to fight again and he shouldn't need to. In addition, Silva destroys St-Pierre.
In my last post, I wrote "champions from other weight classes" which is totally redundant. Scratch that and go with other champions.
I think I agree with Steve...these superfights are great, but the main responsibility is to the division. Anderson Silva has been so dominant that fights outside of his weight class can be easily justified, but St. Pierre should have to get at least a couple more title defenses under his belt before he ventures to other weight classes.
I think this all stems from the odd obsession about who is the best "pound for pound" fighter...which is a great topic for discussion, but isn't really practical. I think that fighters have a natural weight class...one that suits their athletic abilities best...anytime they fight out of that weight class there will always be questions...legitimate questions I think...like is the extra weight slowing him down...is he going to gas early because he cut too much weight...etc.
I'm so sick of all this superfight talk. That's something that should only take place AFTER you've smoked everyone else in your division. Like Andersons clearly has. Anything less, is just insulting to the contender for your belt. It's like saying all their hard works counts for nothing, because you're essentially overlooking their potential as an opponent.
dudes superfights are what we need. pride used to do it, now its the ufc's turn, and its about time.now i get your points above, but common how kickass will this fight be
D.G......No Mas. No more fued.No more insults. It was nothing personal. Our "fued" was all in fun, much like pro-wrestling. I'm sorry to The Fight Network for being one of the people who almost ruined it for everybody. We the fans need our opinions to be heard, and I really hope that free speech can live on, here on The Fight Network. So, on that note..........G.S.P. does not want this fight. He side steps everytime he is asked if he would take on Silva and I think he knows that this is a really bad match-up for him. Nobody in MMA has been as dominent as Anderson Silva period. When you blow out a division, you dont look down a weight class, you look up right? G.S.P has lost to Matt Serra, what do you think would happen if he faced Silva? D.G., Paul , you can take it from here if you want. Love to here what you guys think.
Oh, by the way....... Baby J is gonna beat G.S.P this time. Just change B.J's nickname from "The Prodigy" to "The Monkeywrench" because thats what he is here. Dana White, I think you better find some other fights for Anderson. Sorry D.G., and Paul.....now take it away guy's! "Thanks goes out to The Fight Network for giving us this time to speak." Mass
