Baton Rouge, Louisiana, hosted Smackdown this week with the show being booked around the fall out of the break up between Edge and Vickie Guerrero.
And the show begins where the last episode left off, with the now ex-fiancé of Vickie Guerrero, Adam "Edge" Copeland, holding a mic in his hand and with something seemingly important to say!
Edge goes over what transpired between himself and his ex-fiancé last week, then says that he's had seven days to collect his thoughts but that his decision still stands and that "THE WEDDING IS OFF!!!" The Rated R Superstar adds that he's happier being his own man and that Vickie was never good enough for him anyway.
Suddenly, the familiar shrill of the GM resonates through the arena. "Excuse me, baby! If you think that you can come out here and say that it's my loss because we're not getting married, you have another thing coming! Last week you said that you're the ‘real' General Manager of Smackdown, well let's see what you think about this..." (I told you to be wary of the wrath of a woman scorned, Edge!) Vickie goes on to book her ex into a No Disqualification Match against The Big Show as a "warm up" for his title match against Triple H at GAB. Edge responds by calling Vickie a loser, to which Vickie orders the termination of his microphone. Bizarrely, this segment seems to place Edge in the babyface role against the heel GM. I doubt this is the WWE's long term plan for Edge's character, though. Odd.
A vignette airs hyping Maria's imminent debut on Smackdown.
CURTAIN JERKER: MATT HARDY vs SHELTON BENJAMIN
Collar and elbow tie up in the centre of the ring. Both men jockey for positioning.
Neck-breaker into a near fall by Shelton.
Loud "Hardy, Hardy, Hardy" chants echo the arena, encouraging the United States Champion onward towards victory!
Stinger Splash in the corner by Shelton Benjamin.
Matt Hardy teases a Twist-Of-Fate but ends up hitting his opponent with a bulldog instead. Cover and a kick out, though, by Benjamin.
Hardy teases another Twist-Of-Fate but gets hit by a T-Bone suplex from Benjamin instead! 1-2-no!
Matt teases a third Twist-Of-Fate. Try something else Matt!!!
A clothesline out of nowhere seals the shock win for Benjamin!
Winner: Shelton Benjamin
Cameras cut to the back where Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins cut a painful promo about how they are severing ties with Edge and pledging their allegiance to Vickie after the Canadian's berating of them last week on Smackdown.
MATCH TWO: MR. KENNEDY vs DOMINO
MVP comes out to help with colour commentary for this match.
Kennedy cuts a promo before the match starts that basically lights the spark for a future feud between himself and MVP.
The ring bell sounds and the match gets underway. Kennedy mockingly applauds his opponent after Domino takes him down with a simple hip toss.
Kennedy seems to take a page out of The Rock's and Stone Cold Steve Austin's book for this match, playing up the ‘entertainment' factor of his match more so than the academic wrestling portion of it.
A Mic Check finally settles matters.
Winner: Mr. Kennedy
Winner: Kennedy
After the match MVP confronts Kennedy, but Umaga jumps Kennedy from behind before anything can transpire between the two former Smackdown friends. Umaga nails Mr. Kennedy with a Samoan Spike while MVP watches in amusement from ringside.
Cameras cut to the back where this time it's Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neely throwing their support behind Vickie's love rival, Edge. The segment ends with Chavo assuring Edge that he will "take care" of everything with Vickie.
After a commercial break we see Chavo Guerrero barge into the General Manager's office with Bam Neely. However, as Chavo begins his verbal assault he quickly changes colours and pretends to back Vickie instead of Edge. Vickie sees through his bullshit, though, and books him into a match against Triple H.
MATCH THREE: JOHN MORRISON AND THE MIZ vs FINLAY AND HORNSWOGGLE
If there truly are wrestling gods, then I pray that Hornswoggle gets injured right from the start of this match and that the other three continue as planned but without the comedy.
Finlay and Morrison start off for their respective teams, with the Irishman taking full control.
Hornswoggle tags in and hits two stunners on both opponents, but is then felled by a double drop kick.
The heels cut the ring in half, isolating Hornswoggle.
Hot tag to Finlay, who cleans house.
A Celtic Cross almost settles matters, but Miz makes the save for his tag team partner!
Shillelagh-shot! The referee didn't see it! Tag to Hornswoggle! Tadepole Splash! 1-2-3!
Winners: Hornswoggle and Finlay
Well, Hornswoggle didn't get injured, but at least he cut out the comedy crap from this match in favour of actual wrestling. I am therefore still a strong believer in the wrestling gods!
MATCH FOUR: TRIPLE H vs CHAVO GUERRERO (W/BAM NEELY)
The story of this match is Chavo's tenacity versus Triple H's sheer power.
Power seems to win out early on as Trips throws Guerrero shoulder-first into the ring post.
Bam Neely interferes from the outside to swing momentum back in Chavo's direction!
Arn Anderson Spine-buster by Triple H! Pedigree! It's over!!
Winner: Triple H
After another commercial break WWE Trivia tells us that WWE Video games have sold 39 million copies this decade. I guess that means that Vince McMahon is rich. It also means that there are a lot of un-tanned WWE fans out there (myself included, sadly).
MATCH FIVE: NATALYA AND MARYSE vs MICHELLE MCCOOL AND CHERRY
Jim Ross mentions how both heel women are from Canada. I guess that's kinda cool when you think about it. Too bad only one of them knows how to wrestle though.
Maryse and McCool start off for their respective teams. Both girls show off moves they've learned.
Cherry tags in and shows some actual ring psychology.
Nattie tags in as well and bodyslams Cherry into the ring ropes, injuring her leg!
Nattie softens up Cherry's leg some more and then makes her tap out immediately to the Sharpshooter!!
Winner: Natalya and Maryse
After the match Jim Ross states that "Uncle Bret Hart must be smiling at that." Then Nattie Neidhart attacks Michelle McCool from behind, in an assault that culminates with a snap-suplex by Nattie on her rival outside the ring by the announcer's table!
MATCH SIX: JESSE AND FESTUS vs ZACK RYDER AND CURT HAWKINS
Jesse and Curt Hawkins start off for their respective teams.
Jesse is the aggressor early on, pummelling Curt with stomps in the corner.
Early tag to Festus, who "mauls" Ryder! Lots of big power moves from Festus. Zack Ryder runs to his corner where he and Curt Hawkins decide to intentionally get themselves counted out.
Winners: Jesse and Festus (via count-out)
As the ring bell sounds to end the match Festus returns to his stoic state while Hawkins and Ryder double team Jesse! After that, they hit a double spear on Festus, who seems oblivious to the attack! However, they forgot about Jesse outside the ring, who rings the bell to wake up his tag team partner! Festus explodes and clears the ring as the two heels are forced to run up the ramp in retreat!
MATCH SEVEN: STEVIE RICHARDS vs VLADIMIR KOZLOV
Apparently Kozlov has strange Russian goth rock music as his entrance theme now. Personally, I prefer his old music.
Alright, I think we get the idea now that Vladimir Kozlov is being pushed as a monster. Time to put him into an actual feud.
Body-scissors applied by Vladimir Kozlov.
On a side note, the commentators always talk about Kozlov being a "Samba Champion." But I always thought samba was a form of dance. So is that title really ‘that' scary and/or threatening?
At any rate, a head-butt to the back of Richards's head finally finishes the ECW Original off.
Winner: Vladimir Kozlov
We're taken backstage again where Edge, Chavo Guerrero, Bam Neely, Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins are all arguing. Edge tries to bring everyone onto his side in lieu of his big main event match coming up, but Vickie Guerrero enters into the fray and immediately threatens to fire anyone who helps Edge in his match tonight, and then threatens to fire Edge if he doesn't go through with his no DQ match against The Big Show, before ultimately telling him, "Go out there and get beat like a man, if you are a man!"
MAIN EVENT: THE BIG SHOW vs EDGE; NO DISQUALIFICATION MATCH
Before the match starts Vickie Guerrero is wheeled out onto the stage so that she can observe the contest first hand.
The action spills to the outside, where Big Show whips Edge into the fan barricade!
Spear out of nowhere by The Rated R Superstar on the outside!
After a commercial break we see Edge using a Kendo Stick to his advantage, but The Big Show uses his pure strength to put himself back in the driver's seat.
Ominously, Vickie Guerrero has now wheeled herself down to ring level at ringside.
Back in the squared circle now, and Edge applies a pretty sloppy sleeper hold to his opponent. To his credit, The Big Show sells the hold as if his WWE contract depends on it!
Vickie seems to be showing some concern for Edge's welfare at ringside.
Tremendous DDT by Edge! Near fall!
Vickie looks relieved that Edge has turned the match around into his favour!
Edge brings a chair into the ring but The Big Show punches it out of his hands and into Edge's own face!
Chokeslam tease, but Edge legally low-blows his opponent!
The Canadian goes for a 1 man con-chair-to! But no! Big Show grabs him and hits his Chokeslam finisher instead!!
Now it's Big Show attempting the 1 man con-chair-to! But wait! Vickie orders the match to be stopped!!
Winner: No Contest
After the match Vickie lays herself on top of Edge, covering him and physically protecting him from any further harm. As Edge comes to he looks around with groggy eyes and then realizes what Vickie has done to protect him. Vickie mouths to Edge that she loves him and then Edge mouths that he loves Vickie too! Then Edge asks Vickie to marry him again, to which Vickie mouths "yes!" The two kiss passionately as Smackdown goes off the air, much to the chagrin of the Louisiana fans in attendance!
So my guess to this whole off again on again thing is Taker wasnt ready to come back tonight to ruin their wedding so they ended it.
I'm as surprised as you that someone would sign the petition to "show support" for Dan, but hey, what can I tell ya... the people who are a big fan of Dan probably got a few screws lose to begin with anyway. Just for the record, I'm not jealous of Dan. I'm annoyed because he's single handedly taken what was once a great radioshow and run it into the shitter. Most of the idiots who post here, such as jackass patrol, haven't been around long enough to remember how great this show was back in the 90s. Do you ever wonder BTW why the current regime at Law don't put up any old interviews from the golden era in the 90s? Because then you idiots would have a reference to what the show was like before it was destroyed by one Dan Lovranski. Sign the petition and I'll bring it to the higher ups at The Fight Network, I assure you --- www.petitiononline.com\Mouth\petition.html
The 90's? You're talking about how good the show was in the 90's? It's 2008, for god's sakes. Will you please get over it and stop spamming the blog comments? Dan does a great job. Besides...who would you have replace him? Who else cares as much as Dan does? Who else can be a strong anchor to the show? Who can remain relatively impartial in those heated interviews? Who displays journalistic objectivity in wrestling? As far as I'm concerned Gotthorm, you're too wrapped up in your own personal nostalgia to recognize the facts. Dan does a great job and listeners enjoy having him on air. Learn a lesson, for god's sakes.
GUESS WHAT?!
I THINK EDGE IS SEXY!!!
BROTHER!!!
Me thinks taker's not gonna return untill after the bash. look at the timing of the wedding. BEFORE the Bash. it will only spoil it. They could have HHH come in and ruin the wedding, showing a clip of edge with that wedding planner, then Vikie gets pissed and i mean Stephanie McMahon pissed offed, brings 'Taker back at the bash and he costs Mr. Rated R the title and sets up a Hell in a cell match at Summerslam.
Sound good to u guys?
I agree the show was awesome when it first started, I was a fan of Jeff Marek and Dan as a team. I did not hear much of Donnie. However, Jason, John, and Dan are still great for one reason - they care about wrestling continue to put out a great show. What they hell do you think the FightNetwork "higher ups" are going to do run the show themselves? Great, I'll make sure to stop tuning in right then.
LAW is a pretty good show you guys . That petition thing is a bit harsh I think . Yes Dan goes right right alot and does other little things here and there . He's been on the air awhile now , he's not going anywhere unless he chooses to . Why don't you guys listen to a different wrestling show if you dislike Dan so much ? Theres quite a few on the internet - streaming audio - pretty simple . I'll be enjoying the show as usual this Sunday night .
